37 When on a wintery evening in Stockholm you see a crowd heading to the Hovet Arena – then join them. For inside this grim-looking building you'll join 5,000 cheering hockey fans waving yellow and grey banners. Hovet – which is part of the Globen sports complex – is the home of the Stockholm-based ice hockey team AIK. Following light shows, announcements and a heartfelt rendition of the Swedish national anthem, 'Du Gamla Du Fria', fi ve players from each team will line up on the ice, the referee will drop the puck and the game is on. Then follows three 20-minute periods with rough tackling, fi st fi ghts, red cards and spectators jeering the referee's decisions. The bars are open and there are plenty of opportunities to purchase fi nger food and beverages. Access from your downtown hotel is easy. You simply head to the metro and ask at the ticket offi ce where to get off. Or you just follow the crowd. An evening in the company of boisterous ice hockey fans is a sensational experience throughout the autumn to early spring season when visiting the Swedish capital.
